Faik Pasha was a Pharmacist General in the Ottoman Empire Army, whose name was given to our street (1814-1866)
Who is Faikpasha? 1814-1866. Francesco Della Suda was born in Syra Island in Greece,as a son of a poor family.(1814)
At the age of 12 he was placed in an orphanage in Istanbul.
He worked as an apprentice at the pharmacy ,later in Maltepe Military Hospital worked as a pharmacist assistant , entered medical school in 1844 and graduated as a pharmacist troops.
The military health organizations in the Crimean War he had put great effort to meet the needs of pharmaceutical and medical supplies, he was brought to the Central Pharmacy in-chief of the Ottoman army.
In 1859 he has increased to ‘major general’. 1862 London, 1855 1st Paris 1863 Istanbul World exhibition he won medals with the participating drug and morphine collections.
Pera
In 1849 the Beyoğlu Pera Caddesi (Independence Avenue) Large Pharmacy on which open (Grand Pharmacia Della Suda) Istanbul is one of the first pharmacies.
Sociéte de Pharmacie de Constantinople and the Sociéte Impérial de Medicina de Constnatinopl: Faik Pasha I was one of the founders of these associations, He was the first member of the Sociéte de Pharmacie de Paris (today Académie Nationale de Pharmacie) from Ottoman Empire.
Because of his services to the Ottoman Empire he was titled as a ‘Pasha’ and his name was changed to Faik Pasa instead of Della Suda.
Turkish opium contains high quality morphine best known as opium in Europe, Francesco della Suda and his son Pharmaceutist Giorgio della Suda Faik Pasha II(1835-1913) exhibited Turkish Opium first time in European Congresses and awarded.
During this period located in the stone building that dates back to the present as Çukurcuma Faik Pasha extending Galatasaray Street and the Turnacıbası “Faik Pasa Hill” was the name of Francesco della Suda: the famous pharmacist of Abdulaziz period, in the cemetery of Saint-Esprit has a bust on a katafalk.
Della Sudda
In the Donizetti Paşa Biograpy by Emra Aracı, Francesco Della Suda (he was the grandson of Faik Pasha I) was called as a “gentleman, the son of an Istanbul gentleman,” He was a student of Franz Liszt (1880) Grand Son Della Suda was also studied with the famous pedagogues Theodor Leschetizky (1830-1915) and Theodor Kullak (1818-1882) He was a sociable and friendly personality.
In May 12, 1882 in the course of the day, Della Suda played Chopin Barkarole ,his teacher Liszt resembled his style of playing of a galloping horse Westphalia.Never married Della Suda lived with butler named Dandigin in detached houses in Faik Paşa street Beyoglu.

Faik Pasa Street
The last representative of the Della Suda family was piano teacher Francesco della Suda died childless in family’s home in Faik Pasa street.
Mr.Francesco Della Suda gave piano lessons to lady Zeynep Altar. She was married with Mr.Cevat Memduh Altar (1902-1995), Mr.Suda was very loved his young student and gave a gold necklace to her as a marriage gift. (1933) This necklage was given to Della Suda’s mother by Ottoman Empire Sultan Abdulaziz as gift of a commemorative object. This necklace has a very high moral value which is still in the Altar family today.
Francesco della Suda gave his photograph to Mr.M.Cevat Altar. This photo also is in the Altar family archives and (published in the Journal of Music Andante)
